Some days I really wonder why I keep doing this to myself. I know that reading Ariana Nash’s books is not good for my mental health. She’s just so good at bringing out a strong emotional reaction from her readers. And I’ve had a soft spot for Vasili from the first snippet Ms Nash posted in her FB group. He’s one of those characters that twists you up inside and takes over your world with just a twitch of a brow. I kept on oscillating between loving him (and wanting to shield him from the world) and hating his guts. So I totally get how Niko is feeling. And I’m impressed that he hasn’t killed him yet. I know I would have because my tolerance for this sort of behaviour in real life is close to zero.The story gets more complex as we get to explore a new part of the world – the fascinating south and the city of Seran. There’s a new addition to the gang (Yasir) that brought new depth to Niko and Vasili’s already complex and messed up relationship. I tried very hard not to like Yasir because I’ve learned time and again not to trust anyone Ariana Nash writes. I was so focused on trying to find a reason to distrust him that the next betrayal totally blindsided me. And while I was still processing that one, Ms Nash kept on with the blows. The last few chapters went on like a blur. It was a whirlwind of events that will require at least one re-read to fully process and appreciate.I’m still trying to wrap my head around the ending. Part of me doesn’t trust it at all. I just know Vasili (and Ms Nash’s writing) that I’m highly suspicious. Which makes me even more anxious to get my hands on the last book of the series. And while I know that once again, I’ll end up feeding my anxiety and destroying whatever peace of mind I will get back by that time I will get it as soon as it’s available. Because I NEED to know how this whole mess will get resolved. Wow...just wow. I have no words. This book blew me away and then some. While I loved the previous book, the sequel cemented this series as one of my top favorites of all times. Nash holds no punches with this one. Characters--even the ones we come to care for--make decisions that wreck us. Allies you thought were allies, turn out to be deceivers. Even Vasili has surprises up his sleeves. Sweet one moment, a viper the next. And speaking of Vasili, his and Niko's romance really comes to fruition in this book. The first was just hate with a sprinkle of lust. Now we get to watch the kindling of love and desire lit in the first one, finally blossom in the sequel. But every sweet moment is punctuated by a painful one. Every development between Vasili and Nico is two steps forward then one step back. Mrs. Nash is truly the queen of slow burn enemy to lovers. I got to experience firsthand the conflicting feelings Niko has for Vasili. Just a touch though. Even at his worst, I couldn't bring myself to be mad at him for long. Because we know why he's doing the things he's doing. What drives him. What sort of man he is underneath and what he could become if he were free to do it. We also get a new ally in the charming Sereenian man, Yasir. I truly adored him. The perfect person to balance out the animosity and unresolved sexual tension between our wicked prince and stubborn blacksmith. He's charming, funny, and a true friend. I loved getting out of Loreen and learning about the culture of Seran. I love the little reveal of Niko's backstory. And I'm really excited how Nash is going to slot all these puzzle pieces in place in the next installment. It's going to be one heck of a finale. I have no idea how all of this idea. But I'm excited--and also a little afraid. Well, okay, REALLY afraid. But I trust Ariana Nash to deliver an epic send off to Vasili and Niko's story.
